Inquiring Minds

“I’d always been taught that I had to sort out my own problems – if the outreach worker hadn’t come up to me… I’d have never asked for help. I find it easier to accept help now.”
Advice and Information Service User

People with mental health needs experience unique types of obstacles in obtaining specialist mental health advice and information and may find mainstream advisory services too daunting or difficult to use.

Feedback tells us that access to information about rights, services and mental health issues can increase peoples’ sense of empowerment and support paths to recovery – reducing exclusion and isolation.

The Inquiring Minds Project offers 4 main services:

1. Advice and Information Sessions:
For service-users and their relatives / friends in accessible locations across Brighton and Hove. Some of these sessions can be made available to disadvantaged or marginalised groups.

2. Information Training Sessions:
For small groups of mental health service-users on matters of particular concern to them.

3. Mental Health Awareness Training:
To local voluntary sector organisations and employers to challenge stigma and discrimination associated with mental ill health.

4. Links with the Service User Involvement Project:
Offering training to service user consultants to help them to participate in service planning and delivery. To complement our service user involvement work, we also work with other health and social care organisations to assess the impact on mental health service user involvement on the development of their services.
