Caring for a Young Person

Caring for a young person who is experiencing mental health problems can at times be very difficult. We are often contacted by the parents or guardians of young people that are looking for more advice and information on how best to cope, and how to get the child that they care for the support that they need.

We have created this section because we understand that caring for a young person presents unique difficulties for carers, and that there are differences between adult services and Younger Persons Mental Health Services, which may be confusing to understand.


Accessing Mental Health Services for Young People and Children


CYP Wellbeing Service (age 4-25)

The Community Wellbeing Service works in partnership with the Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) (/specialist-camhs) in Brighton and Hove to ensure that people are directed to the most appropriate service. This could be the Community Mental Health Service, Specialist CAMHs or the Schools Wellbeing Service.

The Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Children and Young People’s Service offers support to young people who are experiencing mild depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and relationship issues.  They provide a range of community based short term therapeutic interventions for children and young people who do not meet the threshold for Specialist CAMHS.  

Short term interventions can include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialogue Face to face Counselling  including Specialist Black Minority & Ethnic (BME) and Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ) counselling
  • e-wellbeing online counselling
  • A wide range of activity based groups to help with such issues as worry and anxiety
  • Brief Interventions offering support and advice
  • Family Interventions

Youngminds is a national organisation specialising in support for your people’s mental health, offering advise for both young people and their parents/guardians.
