Inpatient Services

Most people receive treatment and support in the community but sometimes people are admitted to hospital for a period of inpatient treatment. In Brighton & Hove, Inpatient Services are provided at Millview Hospital working age and older people (with a functional mental health issue) and the Brunswick Ward at Lindridge (for people with Dementia).  If beds are full in the local hospitals, people can be placed in other hospitals in the surrounding area until a bed becomes available locally.

Admission

If it is thought that somebody might require an inpatient stay, the Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team (CRHTT) will assess them to see if this is the most appropriate option. Other options will include intensive support at home from the CRHTT or referral to other community based services.

Patients can be a voluntary patient if they and their psychiatrist agree that an inpatient stay will be of use. Patients can also be compulsorily detained under the Mental Health Act.

National Mind have produced a series of booklets including one on Admission to Hospital under a Section of the Mental Health Act.

In hospital

In hospital, a patient will be involved in drawing up their own care plan with staff. While in hospital patients receive treatment and have access to activities and to other services such as advocates and chaplains.
