Coronavirus: Weekly Wellbeing Information & Tips

Mind in Brighton and Hove care about your wellbeing and mental health in these challenging and unsettling times. We want you to know that you are not alone and that there are some things you can do to support your own wellbeing.

Please see the first edition of our new Weekly Wellbeing Information & Tips Sheet here, with ideas, local and national initiatives, and activities that you can do at home to support your wellbeing and mental health during this difficult time. The next 5 weeks will focus on each one of the ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ so please keep an eye out.

We recognise that there is a lot of information out there and that what works for some people won’t necessarily work for others, but we hope that you can find one or two things that help you improve and maintain your wellbeing during this time.

It is also important to be kind to yourself, and remember to take one day at a time. By following the Government advice on social distancing, which is enabling you and others in your community to stay safe, you are already looking after your own and others wellbeing.

Pathways to Health Update

Due to the latest Government advice on halting the spread of Covid-19, Pathways to Health have had to make the difficult decision to close the group ear acupuncture clinics as from today (Tuesday 17th March) initially for 2 weeks. This will mean no clinics at Mind on Tuesday 17th, 24th and 31st March and this will be reviewed over the next weeks in response to developments and advice given by Government and NHS briefings.

Audio Active launch Room to Rant

Audio Active’s new service Room to Rant is a space for young men to ‘get stuff off their chest’. Members are encouraged to be themselves, talking and exploring their struggles and life experiences through spoken word, rap and hip hop. Room to Rant is the genuine voice of the group, no previous experience is necessary. These relaxed drop-ins will help participants build on lyric writing and improvisation skills. The sessions will be facilitated by two highly experienced and accomplished rappers who are well respected in the hip hop and music scene in Brighton.

Details:

Age: 16-25;

Day and Time: Thursday evening 6-8:30

Start date: 26 September 2019.

Venue: Youth Advice Centre, 11 St George’s Pl, Brighton BN1 4GB

The sessions will run throughout the year and members will be supported to engage with the project.

Get Set To Go launches in Hastings

Mind in Brighton and Hove is using the power of physical exercise to tackle mental health problems in Hastings.

Mind in Brighton and Hove has been awarded funding by Sport England and the National Lottery to help people in Hastings try new sports and activities to help improve their physical and mental health. Through this work, Mind in Brighton and Hove  is supporting people experiencing mental health difficulties such as depression and anxiety to build their confidence to join sports clubs, go to the gym or take up a new sport such as running, swimming and football to name a few.

Mind in Brighton and Hove is working closely with partners Albion in The Community and Sussex Cricket Foundation to deliver community sports and activity sessions and to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment within local sport and leisure facilities.

We are starting our Get Set to Go project with Free Street Cricket Taster sessions

The Taster sessions will be followed by a 12 week programme starting in October

Mental Health Awareness Training for Sport and Physical Activity.

Mental health awareness for sport and physical activity was developed with support from Sports Coach UK and is designed for coaches, sport administrators, volunteers and front of house staff.

What’s covered?

  • Understand common misconceptions about mental health and the impact of stigma and discrimination.
  • Identify the positive impact that being active has on physical and mental health.
  • Appreciate the barriers that stop people getting active.
  • Talk confidently about mental health.
  • Know where to signpost people to if they need support.
  • Identify practical actions to make your service more accessible for everyone.

This training is for anyone who works in the sports and physical activity sector and would benefit from mental health awareness we will be delivering 2 training sessions in October/November dates and venues to be confirmed if you are interested please contact:

We are also seeking Peer Volunteers for our Get Set to Go project

  • You will volunteer in Hastings
  • Support participants to attend sessions
  • Build relationships with participants

New project Practise Hope

Mind Brighton and Hove are proud to be working with Health Education England, National Mind, Olly’s Future, North Kent Mind and Kingston Mind on a new initiative project with local General Practices called Practise Hope.

The ethos of the project is collaboration, co-production and participation. We know that initiatives like Practise Hope are needed when we see the data below:

  • 90% of people with mental health problems are cared for entirely within primary care.
  • 50% of mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% begins by age 24.
  • 20% of 14-16 year olds in Brighton and Hove report that they have self-harmed.
  • Only around 1 in 8 of those who self-harm (10yrs-25yrs) present to hospital.
  • In the UK there is one death by suicide every 2 hours.
  • Brighton and Hove as the 4th highest local authority suicide rate in England.

The project aims to embed whole practice change in how we manage children and young people presenting with suicidal thoughts and/or self-harm behaviours.

New Sussex Advocacy Partnership

A New Sussex Advocacy Partnership started on 1st July 2019, bringing together specialist advocacy providers to deliver an integrated advocacy service across Brighton and Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex. As part of this new partnership, Mind in Brighton & Hove will continue to provide Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) and Community Mental Health Advocacy for the people of Brighton & Hove.
