Stress isn't a mental health problem, but it is closely linked to our mental health. Stress is how we react when we feel under pressure or threatened. It usually happens when we are in a situation that we don't feel we can manage or control. Sometimes, a small amount of stress can help us to complete tasks and feel more energised. But stress can become a problem when it lasts for a long time or is very intense. In some cases, stress can affect our physical and mental health. You might hear healthcare professionals refer to some types of stress as 'acute' or 'chronic':

National Mind have a range of free online resources on understanding stress including:

They also have a free guide on mental health in the work place which contains information on stress and a range of related topics including, dealing with difficult work relations, and returning to work if you've been off for your mental health. You can also download a work focused Wellness Action Plan which is a practical resource aimed at supporting your own mental health at work.
